Cut away of a tooth and gums to show how gum disease affects the tooth. Periodontal (gum) disease is a condition that starts out as gingivitis. Unfortunately, poor oral hygiene can lead to accelerated infection, which causes bone loss and gum detachment.

Symptoms often include:

  • Loose teeth, or having teeth fall out
  • Gum recession
  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath
  • Soreness when you bite or chew

To help our patients avoid tooth loss, we provide essential care steps like:

Gum Disease Screenings

All new patients and returning patients are screened for gum disease on a routine basis. We carefully measure the attachment levels of your gum tissues, to pinpoint areas where the gums may have detached, creating a deep “pocket” around the tooth that collects bacterial plaque.

Deep Cleanings (Scaling and Root Planing)

Deep cleanings allow us to thoroughly remove all loose and calcified buildup across the tooth roots and within the gum pockets. But first, we place a numbing gel over the tissues to prevent any discomfort.

Arestin

Arestin is a locally placed antibiotic capsule that releases medication into diseased gum pockets for several days. We typically place the medication in moderate to severe pockets after a deep cleaning, and monitor their recovery within the next month.
